Dave captures a simple gesture by one of God's creatures that helped him cope through one of life's most compelling moments: 9/11. Like everyone else, I, too, know where I was and what happened to me that day. The world changed and I may have changed, but I seem to think my life-altering moment happened the night I got the phone call from the State Department telling me my parents had died. While I don't wish a significant loss on anyone, I am convinced it is Spirit's way of telling us to slow down, take stock of what is important. What Shadow did that day -- by stepping between Dave and the television -- he shielded his companion from absorbing the entire blow of the disturbing news. Shadow carried that additional burden these past six years; that, to me, is truly unconditional love and devotion.
